SO RESTED HE BY THE TUMTUM TREE —

AND STOOD AWHILE IN THOUGHT

What an unfortunate time to be short-staffed, when there's so much to do! For days, staff members can be seen bustling about, always on the move. No time to stop and talk — the Queen is preparing a surprise! Staff members seem to positively hum with excitement. Their numbers are replenished in fits and bursts. Groups of new hotel staff appear all at once, until there seems to be even more of them than there were before the disappearances.

They don't seem to understand who you're talking about, if you ask about those disappearances. "Staff turnover happens in every establishment, dear. Why — they might have even gotten a promotion!" Aren't you much more interested in the upcoming trip, anyway?

Now that there are more of them, staff members are eager to expand on the surprise. Oh, to see the gardens and the forest! You Oysters are so fortunate that the Queen wishes to show you the wonders of Wonderland. Of course, the forest can be dangerous — or is it only rumors? The opinion seems to change with every staff member you talk to, and no one can pin down why it might be dangerous. The only consensus seems to be to stay close to your escorts.

And most importantly: please remember the buddy system at all times.

BUDDY SYSTEM

07/11 - 07/12

At some point during all the preparation, Oysters may find themselves pulled in by another person. Physically pulled in, in some cases. Once this initial draw happens, the pair will be unable to stay very far away from each other.

When asked, staff members will reply that the two have been paired up for the upcoming trip! They are quite serious about the buddy system, you see. Going out into the forest alone is never a wise idea, and the Queen is so very concerned about your safety.

What's that? You don't trust, or even know, the person you've been paired with? It's a good thing you two will be spending so much time together, then, isn't it? Plenty of opportunity to learn to understand each other.

Shouldn't you be packing, anyway? You'll be leaving soon, after all!

THE QUEEN'S GARDEN

07/13 - 07/14

The garden itself is beautiful and spans multiple acres. There is a winding path lined with neatly manicured rose bushes in all colors, groves of fruit trees, wildflower patches where the air is heavy with bread and butter flies. Elaborate water fountains and delicate streams flow between small ponds, each bordered by different types of water plants and filled with everything ranging from goldfish to koi. Bright, sunny spots perfect for a picnic are easy to come by, as are quiet nooks tucked away in the shade.

Everything needed for a rousing game of croquet is set up in a relatively clear area of the garden. Participation in a good, friendly game of Oysters versus their staff escorts is encouraged — all in good fun, of course! Croquet is the traditional game of the royal family, after all.

As afternoon begins to wind into evening on the first day, Oysters are ushered towards a part of the garden that contains a large hedge maze. The group is kept together as they wind through the maze. The staff members who lead them clearly seem to know exactly where they're going, and never hesitate at the many different forks in the maze.

Before the sun has set, they will arrive in a large clearing in the middle of the maze, where a great feast has been set up with the food they helped to prepare over the last few days. Oysters are informed that this is the last time on the trip that their meals will be taken care of for them. Enjoy it! Once they're out into the forest proper, they will have to make use of the Wonderland information pamphlets and their camping skills.

It is in this same clearing that they will stay the night. For this first night, staff members will assist in setting up tents if needed.

THE TULGEY WOOD AND RUINS

07/14 - 07/18

The next day comes with more bright sunlight, at first. As the group continues through the second half of the maze, the foliage above grows thicker and the inside grows darker. Astute Oysters may notice that the make up of their staff escorts seems to have shifted overnight. The members of the hotel staff that were so excited and helpful in the garden are few and far between, replaced by those in dark suits, all with some form of club pattern on them.

It's the Order of Clubs, the few remaining hotel staff will say when asked. They are protectors, enforcers — and the forest is dangerous. The Queen is so considerate of their safety, to bring the Order out now.

The end of the maze comes relatively quickly. It opens out onto an expansive forest, but even here the sunlight does not return in full force. Whether it's the density of the branches, the overcast day, or the wisps of fog that drift through the trees, the light overhead is weak and the air chilled.

The last of the hotel staff remain in the maze. From here on out, Oysters are accompanied only by the Order. As they walk through the forest, a member of the Order seems ever present — there's always one within eyesight, if not within hearing distance. Occasionally, Oysters will catch sight of someone else mingling with the members of the Order. His dark suit is sleek, plain, and the figure he cuts might not have been distinct from the rest if it weren't for his height. And if it weren't for the ceremic rabbit head on his shoulders.

Oysters who seek him out will find that he is no longer present among the group of Order members by the time they arrive.

"You saw Mad March?" one of the Order will say if asked, sounding startled that he was seen. "You best pretend you didn't."

The nights in the forest are even colder. Oysters better hope they can start a campfire, put up their tents against the chill, or stay close to each other for warmth, as the Order will offer no help. They are here only for guidance — and protection.

On the third day in the forest, the group will arrive at the ruins of an old kingdom. Old cottages and shops are only faint outlines, everything but the stone long since rotted away and overgrown with foliage. The remains of a castle isn't in any better condition. Oysters who choose to explore may notice that all shown signs of a battle from long ago. They may even find the skeleton of the king himself, still sitting on his throne. The members of the Order now seem to be alive with activity, splitting off into groups and venturing out while others stay with the Oysters.

Remember the buddy system, the Order tells them. They will stay here for a few nights. This is the last place that is safe to tread, but danger lurks on the outskirts.

THE RETURN

07/18 - 07/19

It starts on the night of the 18th. The woods have been quiet for the most part, with nothing other than the sound of nearby streams and the noises of various animals. That night, even those are gone. An unnatural stillness takes over the area. Those who venture out to find the cause may find nothing — or they may be one of the first to discover that what lurks beyond the old kingdom has ventured closer.

Throughout the night of the 18th and into the day of the 19th, Oysters are at risk of encountering one of three types of creatures.

It may come as the sound of many legged-footsteps, first off in the distance and then close enough that the creature should be within sight. There are only trees, as far as the eye can see. And then motion. Briefly, it seems as though the very trees themselves are coming alive, but it will soon become apparent that these are legs. The creature stands on four limbs as tall as the trees, and when it holds still it camouflages easily among them. The roots it buries into the ground are long talons when unearthed, each tipped in a hooking claw. Its long neck is lined with the same armored scales that make its legs look like trees, and its small head is dwarfed by its extremely long snout, filled with rows of sharp teeth.

This is the Bandersnatch.

Or maybe it comes first as a shrill scream, like nails against slate. The shriek will seem to echo, instilling an unnatural sense of fear in any of those who are unlucky enough to hear it. Before long, the scream will be accompanied by the heavy flap of huge wings. The creature's approach seems to be imminent, and yet, it doesn't come. The moment draws on — and on — and on — and on — is there anything there, or is it only your imagination? Are you afraid of your own shadow, are you hearing screams in the wind and wings in the rustling of the trees?

Until it swoops down and tries to pick you up in its claws. It is a massive bird of prey, resembling a vulture, if a vulture had a twenty five foot wingspan and eerily human eyes. You've found the JubJub bird.

Then there is the reptilian Jabberwock.

There is no subtlety in its approach. The ground shakes with every step, announcing its arrival well in advance. It is bipedal and seems almost ungainly as it stalks through the trees, lurching its scaly body around and whipping its long tail for balance. Whenever this causes it to connect with a tree, the force behind it leaves the tree broken and bent. Its arms end in three fingered talons, and the round head at the end of its sinuous neck is almost entirely mouth. There is the lick of flame in its eyes, and the drool that escapes from its powerful jaws is hot enough to burn.

The members of the Order who had always seemed to be so close are conspicuously absent. It looks like the Oysters are on their own to defend themselves against these creatures.

The Jabberwocky, JubJub bird, and Bandersnatch will not be easily defeated, and few who fight will escape injury! There may be more than one of each creature type, so different groups can encounter the same type of creature if you choose. You can choose to have your characters ultimately triumph and take down the creatures, or fall to the creature. The members of the Order will arrive at the end of the fight. They will take out any creatures that remain, for those who choose not to have their characters successfully kill one, and will begin clean up of the others.

For those who are interested in having their characters seriously injured or even killed, for ease of reference here is the information regarding death and injury from the FAQ:

With the Carpenter's skills, no death or maiming in Wonderland is permanent — though the consequences of it might be. When your character dies, send the mods a PM describing any injuries the character sustained in their demise. For lacerations such as being stabbed or sliced with a sword, etc, characters will be returned to full health in a few days with gold filling in their wound in the style of Japanese kintsukuroi. This repair is permanent and will be a part of your character for the duration of their stay in Happy Hearts, even if you drop and reapp. If your character is killed or maimed through decapitation or the loss of a limb, your character will be in recovery for three days, and will return to the hotel with a ceramic replacement — an animal head for decapitation, and a non-articulated limb for lost appendages. This repair is not permanent unless you wish it to be, and Carpenter will have a flesh replacement ready for your character after another week.

Characters who have medical skills, abilities, or supplies may work to tend the wounds of others in the brief aftermath of the fight. Members of the Order will assure them that they will return to the hotel in the morning to get the medical attention that they need. And indeed, those characters who are still conscious after the fight will find themselves falling asleep at some point. Characters may dream about the same padded box from their first arrival. When they wake, they will be back in the hotel.

If you have any questions, please leave them here!

The Queen's Garden

At least he was accustomed to traveling light. Though really, a qiankun pouch would have gone a long way. Carrying everything they'd need around with them in bags seemed so bulky and restrictive. Still, it felt good to be outside, after living under those artificial lights for so long. Just the scent of fresh greenery alone rather than the stale recirculated air of the hotel was welcome.

There's no harm in enjoying himself, whether it's picking at the local fruit trees, grabbing snacks to line his pockets, or wading into the the many pools and fountains, trousers rolled up to his knees, intent on snatching a fresh fish. No need for a pole, if he was quick enough to grab one as it passed!

The croquet game doesn't interest him all that much, but with his lack of a spiritual tool, weapons, or even his talismans, the mallets used in game seem like they might be useful. And surely the staff won't notice if one goes missing, right?

The Tulgey Wood and Ruins

What had started as a fun outing was now laced in suspicion and concern. Those uniformed guards were back. He made no motion to attack or harass them like before, but he also didn't like letting them too far from his sight(and clearly they felt the same). The number of friendly staff seems to have diminished, leaving them with only the Queen's enforcers as they embark on the thickly forested areas ahead. It's hard to see much, but maybe if he climbs to the top of one of these trees?

He's only just started to climb when a squirrel starts chittering at him for disturbing its home. To those watching it certainly looks like a fully grown man trying to explain himself to a rodent.

Wildcard - Feel free to run into WWX anywhere along the line!

The thing is, Aziraphale knows that Crowley talks to rats, but since they've gotten to this hotel, he hasn't seen it in action. What he has seen in action is shapeshifting. Lots and lots of shapeshifting, himself included.

So when he sees Wei Wuxian whose-face-he-doesn't-recognize-as-Wei-Wuxian talking to the squirrel, he assumes it's another guest at the hotel. "Ah, hello, don't believe we've met, I'm Aziraphale. Do you two need... assistance with something?" he tries, helpfully.

"Like I said, I was just trying to get a better look around! I didn't see your home!" he sniffs.

Being able to hear, understand, and talk back to all sorts of small creatures since drinking that odd tea has made their little nature walk a much more interesting experience, but it's also caused some unforeseen delays. Wei Wuxian turns, when approached, and the squirrel yells a few choice curses before skittering back into its tree.

"I, ah-" he watches the squirrel slip away and shakes his head, "no, no, just a misunderstanding. I'll find another tree."

He makes a rather informal sort of bow; he's gotten lax about them since so many cultures here don't seem to practice it. Still, it's a habit that's hard to break completely. Aziraphale though... he's heard that name before. It was strange enough to stick out in his memory, especially after that odd conversation with Crowley. So this was his unrequited love, hm?

"Wei Wuxian."

Aziraphale, on the other hand, does a proper bow, which he's been having to do a lot lately. He really had thought the last time he'd left China would be the last time he had to do the really formal one with the hands in front.

Anyway, he looks up and appears confused about the name. "Wei... Wuxian?" he asks, his pronunciation somehow impeccable. "What an interesting coincidence!" he exclaims. "Not exactly a common name, is it? Have you met the other one?"

He smiles so brightly, clearly having positive feelings about the other Wei Wuxian and wondering if he'd like this one just as much.

He blinks a couple times in surprise at the gesture. The man looks undeniably foreign, but he still performed it without a flaw. Huh. A smile makes its way on to his lips at that, curious, at the very least.

"Shorter, not quite as handsome?" his grin turns mischievous, "we've met. You could even say we have a lot in common."

The smile he gets in return is so open and wholesome. It's amusing to think of the frustrated and terse man he'd met being sweet on someone like this.

"Aziraphale, I think I've heard your name before too," he makes an attempt, at least, to get his mouth around the word, "you can read love fortunes, or something, wasn't it?"

Crowley hadn't been terribly clear on that point.
lunchbreaks: (if you change your mind)

[personal profile] lunchbreaks 2020-07-14 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
"What?" he asks, suddenly blinking. His face is like rubber, very expressive, a very open face. "Love fortunes?"

He blinks and then shakes his head, finally understanding. "Ah, no, I used to be able to feel love. Not anymore, I'm afraid."

Then his face rubbers all the way back to slight confusion. He hadn't thought of Wei Wuxian as less handsome. They were both very handsome. Wait, that's not the point. "What-- what do you mean you have a lot in common?"
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048945)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-14 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
He shrugs lightly, they all used to be able to do a lot of things, he's sure. Even if he couldn't cultivate properly before, he'd still had his talismans. Now he was barely more effective than the average man. If that.

"Mm, that's it. A friend of yours has it, or did, when I met him. He got it completely wrong though!" Unrequited, what a bunch of nonsense!

The man still looked confused, so Wei Wuxian tried to explain what was difficult enough for him to wrap his head around.

"Right, anyway, so there's two of us. We're both Wei Wuxian, just. Different. Our histories are similar but diverge in places, so we figured we're from different worlds. Lan Zha- ah- It's the same for Lan Wangji as well. Soul-twins maybe? I don't know if there's actually a word for it."

There's something about a person trying to smuggle a croquet mallet out of the game that's just so appealing. Maybe it's the blatant, brassy nature of such a thing. Maybe it's the way it's fundamentally doomed to failure, but for the inattention that is so natural to all thinking beings.

Shepard watches him do it with a mix of admiration and exasperation. Dude. What are you doing.

"Hey," she calls out, arms folded, eyes duly rolled, and just when he thinks he's gotten away with it, too. Well, he has gotten away with it, really, she's not about to rat him out. But still, "You know those things won't hold up, right? If it comes to an actual fight."
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048294)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-14 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
One of the best ways to get away with something was to behave as if there was nothing odd about what you were doing at all, to walk boldly into rooms you weren't invited to, or to keep a straight face no matter how drunk you got. That said, it was incredibly difficult, he found, trying to smuggle away a mallet in the folds of his robes. It was no sword or saber, but a tool was better than none at all. Though, trying to make walking look normal with the oversized hammer tucked in at his side was proving harder than he'd thought.

He was almost off the field, away from the other excited players, when someone called out to him. He sent her a wide-eyed look for a second, before making a shushing gesture.

"I'll take my chances with something over nothing," he shrugs. Besides, the Jiang clan's motto of attempting the impossible wasn't just something he repeated thoughtlessly. It was something he acted on, even if today that meant trying to sneak away from their captors with a giant hammer.

"Who knows, maybe I'll even get so far as a backup plan."
earthborn: (where she has taken no precautions)

[personal profile] earthborn 2020-07-14 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's not a backup plan if you don't have something to actually back up."

Oh good, his situational awareness is terrible enough that she's actually surprised him. He either does this so often that getting caught isn't frightening to him, or does it so rarely that he's never actually gained any skill. Either way, an amateur sneak-thief, so young and sweet, she has to be amused.

"So what's your first plan? Break that stick over a guard's head and run?" Because if so, she's not impressed, "C'mon, what's the scheme? I'm not gonna tell anyone."
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048160)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-15 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
"I haven't thought of it yet, that's why it's backup."

Okay, so most of his plans didn't delve much deeper than busting in swords flashing and keep at it until the enemy stops moving. Or do something big and distracting while the rest of the party escapes and/or surprises the enemy. He usually left the strategy to his allies, with the exception of Xuanwu, which... did it really count since that was more a simple beast than anything else?

"Maybe I just have some extra-large tent poles to hammer," he sniffs, continuing off the field and out of immediate sight of staff. He's at least fairly sure it wouldn't immediately break if he swung it at someone's face just right. And hey, maybe he just wanted a stick he could sharpen, what did it matter?
earthborn: (now is the time to fight)

[personal profile] earthborn 2020-07-16 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
She gives these arguments the time and attention they are due. It doesn't take very long.

"You're kind of a fuckup, aren't you?" She doesn't seem particularly worried about it, neither mocking, nor exasperated. Shepard kind of likes this jackass; she can empathize with a man who doesn't give up on lost causes, "Got a name? I'm Shepard."
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048387)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-16 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He grins, giving a short chuckle at being called out so. He's used to much worse, growing up with a sibling like Jiang Cheng gave you a bit of a thick skin, but hearing it from a complete stranger? He was honestly just amused.

"Big talk from someone who's jealous they don't have a hammer."

He gives a very casual sort of bow in acknowledgement, since most people here don't share the same etiquette as the world he came from. Why did everyone here have such difficult and strange names anyway? And so many people with names that were just a single word!

"Wei Wuxian," he returns, "the taller, more handsome one, if you see someone else running around with the same name."

II.

[personal profile] inquiryguqin 2020-07-14 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Lan Wangji was out and about, around gathering firewood and other resources for camp. It was then he noticed that the other Wei Ying wandered off, and when he follows after him to see what he's up to.

Only to see him climbing up a tree and what it looks like to him, having a conversation with a squirrel.

Looking up at him from below. "Having fun...?"

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-14 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
He'd been so distracted by his conversation with the squirrel, he hadn't even heard Lan Wangji approach, so even with a soft voice, it's enough to startle him, arm slipping from the lowest branch. He's off-balanced, hanging on upside-down by his knees, but at least he hasn't fallen. His hair is hanging low enough to brush Lan Zhan's shoulder though, and as he looks back up, the little rodent has already scurried off, apparently satisfied with having cursed him out.

"Ah- Lan Zhan. I was just... trying to get a better view of where we are."

Becoming worried as he sees he is distracting him and made him startled with his presence. So Lan Wangji positions himself beneath him, his arms open wide and ready to catch him, just in case.

"Wei Ying, are you stuck? If you need to come on down, I can help and I won't speak until you do. Don't worry, I can catch you. Go slowly."
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048189)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-15 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Was he stuck? Well, he wasn't in a great position, but he was pretty sure he could figure his way out of it.

"It's okay! I got it! I got it!" he assures, attempting to swing his weight back up so he's right-side-up, at least. The branch seems to have other plans though, and the sudden motion is enough to snap it messily and he lets out a startled yelp as he tumbles toward the earth. Oops.

Looking up, full of worry, he positions himself right beneath him to where he is at, and open his arms.

"All right. I am here for you, just in case."

Hearing the snap of the branch, he predicted correctly of the possibility of what's going to happen. He doesn't have his golden core, but his body is well-trained, his muscle has the cellular memory of doing the harsh physical training and weight lifting in the Lan Sect style.

In that second, when he sees Wei Ying fall, he rushes forward to catch him in his arms.

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-17 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
He hardly has a moment to react as he's falling, which is probably for the best, since any unwarranted flailing would have earned Hanguang Jun a kick or an elbow to the face. Instead, he lands in a heap in Lan Wangji's arms, whole and unharmed, save for a few twigs and leaves in his hair.

"Ah. Good catch," he laughs, a little breathless from the fall.

"With how often we've wound up like this, I'll be tempted to just have you carry me around all the time!"

The Tulgey Wood

[personal profile] madmarch 2020-07-21 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
[The squirrel isn't the only one who has a thing or two to say to Wei Wuxian.

The tree isn't wide enough to hide a fully grown man, and yet. March steps out from behind it as though he had been there the whole time, just out of view.]

Yiling Laozu.

[He says only the title, its pronunciation mangled from his robotically modulated voice and his accent.]
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048187)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-21 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
[He'd been so engrossed in his conversation, he'd hardly noticed the figure approach. Or had he just been that quiet? Either way, the mechanical noise is startling enough that he fumbles his hold on the tree limb and has to make a clumsy landing.

When he sees the source, he makes a face. He'd hoped his soul-twin's drunken rambling about a man with a white rabbit mask was just a bit of fantasy, but unfortunately, here it was. He looks the man(?) over critically, wary, and wishing he'd something more than his flute on him to defend himself.]

Rabbit.

[personal profile] madmarch 2020-07-21 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Name's March.

[One shoulder leans against the tree, casual. Just two buddies out here, having a chat, right?

Right.

He nods towards Wei Wuxian's flute. The mechanical whir that accompanies the gesture is soft, muted.]

I hear you're good.
sadflutenoises: (Default)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-21 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
March then. Wei Wuxian, but I'm sure you knew that.

[It was a title from another lifetime, one he hadn't even asked for, and held little fondness for.

There's something so strange about the way March moves, his mask keeps making odd noises too. When the man nods toward it, he draws Chenqing from his sash, twirling it between his fingers, the tassel a flicker of red as it moves. It makes him feel a bit better, having it in hand, even without his ability to channel.]

What else do you hear? You can't always believe the rumors, you know.
madmarch: (Default)

[personal profile] madmarch 2020-07-21 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Wei Wuxian.

[He makes the concession without hesitation. The pronunciation is better, but not perfect.

His blank gaze moves to follow the twirling of the flute, head tilted as though he were curious.]

Neither can you. We're a lot alike, you and me.
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048074)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-21 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
[The sound is other in a way he can't place. Not even in his dealings with spirits and demons and all manner of monsters has he heard a voice quite like that. It's slightly better, at least, than listening to him try to grate out his old title from an old life.]

That's a bold claim. All I can see is that we both like white rabbits. Or did you also die horribly in another life?

[Not as if he wouldn't know about that much already, given that the room that welcomed him here was meant to look like the old Burial Mounds.]
