Night hunts are practically routine where Lan Xichen's from, at least for cultivators, and exploring an unfamiliar forest with relatively unknown dangers doesn't seem any different just because it's in another world. There certainly seems to be something of a sense of ease as they travel, and then as they set up camp.
During the day, there's a flurry of activity as the camp's occupants drift in and out, setting up or taking down tents, making weapons or food, going off to collect firewood or go hunting or fishing, patrol the area or anything else that needs doing.
In the evening there's a roaring fire to ward off the chill, the scent of cooking food and the sound of conversation.
Someone - quite likely Lan Xichen himself - will invite anyone who happens nearby to come sit down, warm themselves by the fire and have something to eat.
At night, there's likely always someone up on watch who might need company, or who might come to investigate someone nearby.
Nightwatch
He clears his throat, announcing his presence, so hopefully he won't take a spear to the face, then waves a friendly hand.]
Ah... just wanted to say... hello? Thought you might like a little company.
no subject
While I would very much appreciate your company, I admit I am a little surprised you would want mine.
[ Considering the last time they'd spoken, Lan Xichen had all but yelled at him - as much as he ever truly yells, in any case - and brought up painful, conflicting memories.
And especially considering that he is aware that Wei Wuxian now knows at least some of what Jin Guangyao's actions truly were. Wangji had told him that Wei Wuxian had agreed not to take his revenge on Meng Yao, but withholding retribution from someone who has yet to actually commit any crimes is vastly different from wanting to associate with one who has already been complicit in them. ]
no subject
Mm, why's that? My face isn't that thin Zewu Jun, you'll have to do much better than that to scare me off.
[He invites himself, sitting in a lazy sort of lotus pose next to the man and making himself comfortable. They would be family, soon enough, wouldn't they? If he couldn't play nice with Zewu Jun, he'd have no chance of gaining even a neutral standing with someone like Lan Qiren.
He coughs lightly behind his fist.]
Besides, I'm probably the one who should apologize for ah- disrupting your sleep.
no subject
Hmm. Wangji would probably know, but he won't ask his brother to reveal things that Lan Xichen is perfectly capable of discovering himself, if he's observant enough. And as it seems Wei Wuxian has no objection to his company, at least at the moment, he can make sure that he has opportunity to.
His eyebrow raises a little at Wei Wuxian's apology, and he holds that expression for a long moment before a smile tugs at his lips. ]
You never need to apologize for making Wangji happy. I've made adjustments.
[ Adjustments so he doesn't have to hear how much they're making each other happy, but still. He would much rather do that than ask either of them to hold back from each other. ]
And I have no plans to scare you off. I hope you'll find it's very much the opposite. I've always thought that you and Wangji are very well matched. He is - not always careful with his heart. I trust that you will be.
[ It's said with confidence, because it's both a statement of his faith in Wei Wuxian - he does truly believe that he could ask for no better ally when it comes to ensuring Wangji's happiness and safety - and an attempt at making it clear what he expects. ]
no subject
He'd offer to make Lan Zhan happy a little quieter, but without the Lan silencing spell at their disposal, he wasn't sure how possible that was, so he just let it drop with a faint flush and a nod.
What would his Shijie say in a situation like this? Surely, she'd be diplomatic and smooth over any rough edges, and accept any compliments with polite grace. With any luck, she already had, but...]
Oh, that's- that's good.
[Perfect.
He wasn't any good at these serious emotional talks.]
You did? Right- ah, I mean- I will. I think we're at least a little alike that way.
no subject
Well. There are many other things that he has to worry about, but none of them involve smoothing any ruffled feathers from other sects.
So he lets himself smile without trying to hide it. ]
There are many ways that you and he are alike. It will be my privilege to protect you as I do him.
[ Not that either of them truly need him to protect them. Not that his support, his protection had been of any use at all, when it mattered, but allowing his thoughts to go down that road won't help lighten the conversation. ]
And yes, I did. [ The tilt of his eyebrow is just a little bit playful, this time. ] I didn't invite you to come investigate the water ghosts only because I valued your skill.
no subject
I hardly think one of the top cultivators needs a promise of my protection in return, but it's there, for whatever it's worth.
[He grins, and even manages a laugh that isn't forced, glad for a bit of light conversation.]
I- Wait- Even then?! Tell me it was at least mostly my skill! I can't believe you were playing matchmaker!
[He shakes his head, but he's already in better spirits. He'd always thought of himself as pretty smart, pretty skilled, but pretty oblivious should be added to the top of that list as well. Just how long had everyone but him known?!]
no subject
It's a matter of knowing there will be more than one person at your side when things go wrong, and he believes both of them are in need of that. ]
Thank you. The sentiment is worth a great deal.
[ Yes, even then. He's always known the shape of his brother's heart, and there was never a moment where he sought to change his mind. Only to ensure that he was happy, or to mitigate the pain it caused when he could not be.
Wei Wuxian's laugh pulls another smile out of him, warm and amused. ]
I'm afraid I am forbidden from telling a lie.
[ It is nice, to be able to gently tease again. They are family now, after all, and he hopes Wei Wuxian will allow him this bit of familiarity. ]
no subject
When Lan Xichen had asked them along to investigate the aqua demon, they'd only known each-other a matter of what, days? Weeks perhaps? He'd formed a bond with Lan Zhan right away, though he'd been sure then that it was all one-sided and that someone like Lan Wangji was nothing but annoyed by him and his antics.]
I suppose I should be even more flattered then.
[He laughs.]
That even with all the trouble I caused, Zewu Jun still approved.
no subject
But it does not have to be in this moment. Lately, the only occasions he has had to look back into the past and reminisce have been to try to reconcile what he learned of Jin Guangyao with what he had thought he knew, to second guess every step he ever took.
He appreciates it more than he could ever say, to have the opportunity to remember something good. ]
You had eyes only for Wangji even then, or you might have seen how my amusement at the trouble you caused was most unbefitting a Sect Leader.
no subject
[He still finds it rather baffling that Lan Zhan might have liked him, even then, with all his childish teasing. Though, his young and impatient way of showing affection had hardly had any other outlet but to bother Lan Zhan to the point of exasperation and constantly seek out his attention.]
You know, for wanting to have a nice talk, you're awfully good at making me short on words, Zewu Jun. Don't tell Lan Zhan, okay?
[He gives a short laugh, one that cuts off abruptly as he seems to realize something.]
Oh-! I should've been a bit more suspicious, given that you sent me to the cold pools right when Lan Zhan was there too!
no subject
He is only glad that he no longer needs to keep trying to arrange increasingly conspicuous opportunities for them to spend time together. ]
It is safe between us, no matter how tempting it may be to share that I managed to make you speechless for a moment.
[ He is definitely teasing now, more obvious than he is even with Wangji - but then, with Wangji he only needs to make a minute facial expression for his brother to understand that he is being teased.
His expression softens after, though, contemplative for a moment. ]
We are family, now, in all the ways that matter. You don't have to use Zewu jun.
no subject
As for how to address his new soon-to-be-brother-in-law, he supposes that's true, that Zewu Jun is a lot more formal. Wei Wuxian has never done things by halves, and now feels no different. If Lan Xichen wants a bit less formality between them, he's happy to give it, especially since he's been given such express permission.]
Old habits are hard to break, but I'm happy to call you Dabo.
[His smile is a bit crooked, the word unfamiliar on his lips, but he doesn't let the moment linger too long, before sitting up a bit straighter, hand diving into his robes, searching.]
Oh- right, that's- I swear, I did come over here for a reason...
[He trails off before pulling out a little man-shaped scrap of paper, and holding it out toward Lan Xichen. It flickers to life as the spells woven upon it activate, waving for a moment before it flutters into stillness once again.]
Most of my abilities are pretty useless here. But. I thought it might be helpful, if anyone gets separated, that way I can find you, right?
no subject
It isn't quite like a piece of his heart slotting back into place - or if it is, it's a different piece, the edges unfamiliar and just slightly out of alignment. But it is warmth where there had been emptiness, something similar to the way he felt when Wangji offered his support when they first arrived here.
Aside from a brief flicker of surprise, his expression remains composed - but his smile is slow and hesitant before it settles into something real. ]
I would be happy for that as well, Wuxian.
[ He, too, lets the moment pass quickly, instead turning his attention towards what Wei Wuxian is rummaging for, openly curious. Then he smiles again, pleased, as he reaches out to carefully take the little paper man. ]
Very clever. I hope we don't need it, but it speaks well that you have thought ahead. And it brings to mind - I have something for you, as well. It is another's ability, but it is supposed to bring protection and luck.
no subject
His own smile remains, as ever, and he rubs at the end of his nose as Lan Xichen evaluates the gift. Maybe it's silly, but there's no way to know if their Empathy devices are monitored or safe, and he'd much rather be able to rely on his own strength to know his family and friends were all right. Though, he can't take complete credit for the idea. With how Lan Zhan has cautioned him, and with all the struggles they've had lately, it seems foolish not to.]
You... oh?
[He hadn't been prepared for that. His papermen weren't much of a gift, really, just a practical tool. That Lan Xichen had something for him, even if it was inherited from another's abilities, now it was his turn to be surprised.]
That's- Mm, we need all the luck we can get. You have my gratitude!
[He wants to ask if he's sure Lan Xichen can spare it, but it seems rude to dismiss the first gift his soon-to-be brother-in-law has offered.]
How does it work?
